NPM Report on Custom Pollers

Hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction. I am creating a report to indicate battery replacement dates and serial numbers for our monitored UPS's. I can pull the information using the Poller Name from Custom Pollers, but when the report generates because these are show as status they end up in the same column in the report. Ideally I was hoping to have something like

Node IP Address Battery Replacement Date Serial Number Machine Type Building Vendor

But I can't seem to figure out how to break Status into two columns one for serial and one for battery replacement date. Is there a way to separate these? I know if I query the database they all show under status, but I am not sure how I can tell reporter write that they are different.

Solarwinds and Notepager Pro v5

Hello,

I have built a new Solarwinds system (2 physical servers, ORION & SQL) that has NPM 12.2 and SAM 6.5 and I have installed Notepager Pro version 5.

My problem is that I can send an SMS message to all the recipients from Notepager Pro but when I trigger an alert from Solarwinds the SMS message isn't sent/received. I can see that the alert has triggered in Solarwinds but I don't get a text message. Am I missing something obvious?

I have restarted all services and I've also done a comparison with our current, soon to be decommissioned, Solarwinds system (which uses Notepager Pro v3) but I can't see anything obvious.

As always, any help will be very much appreciated.

Is there anyone who has done any kind of testing for monitoring of devices part of SDN? I read a bit on how SDN works and controller is the main here which is responsible for all management and pushing of policies.

I am not that good in networking so just trying to understand the whole picture around this SDN monitoring and the possibilities from Solarwinds side.

We installed Orion 12.2 with NPM, NCM & NTA configration, Able to see all alerts on Dashboard window, but there are need to configure email address so as soon as alerts generate , will get alert with information on email.

Our organization is encouraging us to implement self healing as it pertains to the SolarWinds environment itself (as opposed to self healing of the monitored infrastructure). The Windows services themselves should all be set to "Restart the Service" for Recovery. While we don't experience a lot of SolarWinds server/service issues, there are the occasional ones. Sometimes they just manifest as a problem with a specific module (i.e. NCM) or the web console becomes unresponsive (or just very slow/sluggish). Sometimes we see a polling engine (primary or an APE) has not updated the database in a while, and we do leverage the builtin alert for this, but the trigger action currently is just to send us an email. Typically this type of issue, if prolonged, requires restarting Orion services. I doubt that we would want to create a trigger action for this alert that would automatically just restart all Orion services...but maybe use complex conditions to check something else before determining that it's worthy of doing so (without a human making that decision)?

We do not have the SAM module, and likely won't have this for at least the near term. So any solutions need to leverage existing modules, likely just NPM. For reference, we have: NPM, NCM, VNQM, NTA, and UDT.

Anyway, we really do need to look into this deeper and come up with a self healing strategy, even if it ends up being rather simplistic. We're hoping to get some ideas/opinions from the community and spur some discussion so we can further explore this.

Is this still the solution for SQL Express?

I have a SQL express server. I followed the instructions up to the part where it states in step 4, "Right-click any table and select Query table." Each table already has it's default or own query. If I erase that and execute the query in this process, what will happen to the deleted query? Will the table keep the new query I just executed for defragging? I just want to make sure I don't break anything by doing this process because I am not a Database guy. Please advise.

I just spent 1.5 hours so SolarWinds support could replicate the issue I already told them about. (so why would we pay and additional $200 for this terrible support, but that's another thread) I have setup network sonar discovery to auto import nodes - I picked the options and ran the discovery. Which runs great but it will not import any of the interfaces automatically. If I go in and manually do it it will add all of them that way but I was hoping to do this automatically. My questions.

1. Does this actually work? I found articles say that the network sonar will not autoimport interfaces.

2. If this does work if someone could send me documentation that would be great. I found the Network Sonar instructions on the SW site but no interface trouble shooting tips.

We have our Orion system in a secure Payment Card Industry (PCI) environment. As such, we have limited the number of individuals having access to this environment, and of having any ability to affect the configuration of devices and/or Orion.

With that in mind, my question is as follows: Is it possible to put an additional web console outside a secured environment, and then lock it down to be a READ ONLY environment for displaying the status of nodes. (up/down/unmanaged). How have others addressed this need?

Hi Everybody,

I'm trying to implement a 'no polling update' alert and I'm seeing the alert name (${PollingEnginesDetailsURL}) in the alerts instead of the value. SolarWinds support tells me that this is because this is a deprecated variable. I've looked on Thwack, Google and searched again and again on the variables pick list and I just can't find the replacement, or better yet a map from deprecated variables to their replacement. Can anyone help?

HTTPS monitor error message

Afternoon all, hoping someone is able to help...

I've got a number of Windows 2008 VMs running IIS, when trying to add the HTTPS Monitor template I'm getting the error message, "node xxx failed with 'Down' status. The underlying connection was closed: The connection was closed unexpectedly". Now I have a number of these servers in the same subnet and the Solarwinds box is able to see them without explicit firewall rules in place, has anyone seen this error message before in relation to HTTPS monitoring? I've tried with all the credentials saved in Solarwinds but no joy unfortunately.

Update: I've also tested this by re-adding one of the existing HTTPS hosting servers using the secondary polling engine, they get the same error message. I think this proves it's not a Firewall\endpoint server issue..

Using the NPM and SRM to monitor the storage box, we have C mode netapp storage and added in NPM as well as in SRM, but what is observed in NPM console. NPM is not able to present the interface details of C mode node.

Anyone is using the C mode storage and added in NPM and getting the interface details, If yes kindly let us know (without using the UDNP poller).

NPM reporting ASA incorrect bandwidth

the ASA interface shows a 1 minute input rate of 8540094 bytes/sec (8.5Mb) but NPM reports the interface is 86% utilization of 100Mb/s. why is that?

Changing information directly in the database

How many people directly change things in the database? The reason why I ask is because I haven't felt comfortable enough to make changes that way for fear of breaking something I didn't know about. An example I have that is making me question doing this is I need to change the email of about 63 different email actions to send to a different email.

returns 63 rows.

So I can see the actions and description and know its only 63 which isn't terrible to go manually change. Unfortunately I cannot find a way to separate those out in the action manager. While typing this out though I realized I could find the assigned alerts and do it on each alert rather than click through all bazillion(exaggerated but not crazily) actions. (yes I need to cleanup the actions but this is many years built by a bunch of different cooks, I'm the first designated chef so to speak).

Should you ever change things directly in the DB? if yes.

What things should be checked before updating information directly in the DB?

What situations are people directly changing values in the DB?

Automatic Geolocation - Inaccurate Locations for Map Pins

I just got automatic geolocation working for the world-wide map, but the pin is not being set on the latitude/longitude that is set in the SNMP Location field, the pin is instead being set to the nearest building address or road. I wouldn't find this too be an issue, but it is causing switches from multiple buildings to be combined into a single node (Image Below).

Is there anyway to have it set the pin at the exact latitude and longitude?

Auto geolocation via GPS coordinates resolution?

Playing around with using the Worldwide Map feature where it can geolocate a device based on its GPS coordinates and having some questions. We're more interested in doing it for our campus, which is quite small compared to the default "Worldwide" map it does. Which means that some buildings are somewhat close to each-other. That's where its being a bit odd. Two devices clearly have different coordinates, but only if you go three or four places past the decimal point, but are summed up in one "bubble".

To make things a bit more odd, both buildings in this case are at the end of an "unnamed" street on most maps, and rather than placing the bubble at the end of that street where the GPS coordinates both exist, its placing the bubble at the intersection of that street and a named one. Almost like its snapping to the nearest named street or something. So, curious how it works for others. ie: does it only work to X decimal places of GPS coordinates? Does it place the bubble on the nearest street rather than exactly where the GPS coordinate are? Or should we be using a specific GPS coordinate system instead of the decimal system?

Just curious if anyone else is doing this and what they're experiences are?
