We have Solarwinds NPM and Netflow and in the Orion interface (monitoring a Cisco 2960G switch) have been recently having consistent events of ports going up and down multiple times throughout the day. It started happening with just two ports and has now happened on four different ports.
A typical even would be:
Interface GigabitEthernet0/10 · {MachineName} for node {SwithcName} is Down.
Interface GigabitEthernet0/10 · {MachineName} for node {SwithcName} is Up.
This would happen a few times an hour (no specific time) and just continue happening all day and when it goes down, a minute later it shows it's back up.
The users are not experiencing any issues or messages
We have tried changing the port a specified machine connects to and the message happens on the port we change it too.
All the machines connected to the switch are running Windows 7 and they are different models of Dell purchased at different times and as such some are newer and some are older. Most are desktops but one is a laptop.
We also had events for those ports like this:
{SwitchName} - GigabitEthernet0/18 · {MachineName} Interface Speed changed from 10000000 to 100000000 bps
but when we changed the port speed to Gig instead of Auto negotiate those messages stopped.
Could this be a problem with the switch itself (ports) or is there something else because we find it hard to believe all four machines purchased at different times could have the NIC go bad and cause errors only on this switch. Could there be something wrong with the lines? When tested with an Ethernet tester all pairs were fine but we were wondering if some kind of interference could be causing it or an animal biting into the ether cable runs in the ceiling.
